Compass rose mandala design on paper

Black and grey · Flash

A black ink drawing on white paper shows a compass rose with N, E, S and W markers, set within a circular mandala. The interior is filled with fine dotwork, leaf motifs, scalloped borders and an eight-pointed star in solid black. A line of handwritten script sits along the lower edge of the sheet, inside a thin double-line border.

Sit down, sit, the road will still be here when the tea is poured. You want to hear about the salt woman and her brass compass? Good. Her name was Dalia Serrano, though nobody on the old salt track called her anything but Cartographer, because she drew maps for men who could not read them.

One autumn she set out alone from the wells below the red ridge with a map of her own making. The paper was thick cream and she had ruled a compass rose at its centre, eight points like a star on a wedding cloth. Round it she drew leaves and dots, a small circle for every well she had been told about. Her brother had gone south with the caravan three weeks before and had not sent word. She meant to follow the wind until she heard his camel bells.

On the fourth day the sand took her bearings. The needle swung like a drunk man and would not settle. She sat with her back against a rock and unfolded the map, and she saw that the dotwork was no decoration at all. Every dot was a place where somebody had once stopped, looked about them, and turned around. Beneath the rose, in her careful hand, she had written the line her grandmother liked: not all those who wander are lost.

She laughed until she cried, then she followed the dots. The needle settled at last, due south, and there under a leaning acacia the bells were ringing.
