Compass rose with watercolour clouds

Other · Mixed · Photo

A black linework compass rose with N, E, S and W letters sits at the centre of the image, with shaded points and a thin outer ring. Soft pink, red and blue watercolour-style washes spread behind and below the compass, fading into the skin. The tattoo is shown in close framing on a limb, with the compass centred and the colour washes filling the lower and left areas.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mr Harrod had inked the compass rose in brown at the centre of the sheet and then gone home with a cough, leaving the sky bare. Ada Pettifer had been two years at the drawing table in Whitby, and she knew the masters did not like a clean sky on a chart meant for the herring fleet. She mixed rose madder and a thin ultramarine on a saucer and tested the wash on the margin where no one would look.

She worked the pink low on the left, where the land fell away toward the Cleveland hills, and let the blue pool beneath the rose where the sea would be. The letters N, E, S and W she inked last, the S sitting a touch lower than the rest because Harrod always said the south point was the one that pulled a man home. When the wash bled into the needle, her hands shook, and she blotted it with a square of muslin until the edges softened into something like weather.

The chart went out on the Maud Lennox at dawn, carried aboard by a boy with a satchel. Three weeks later the boy came back up Church Street with a folded letter from the skipper. It said only that the sky on the Dogger sheet was the one thing he had believed through a month of fog, that he had steered by the rose and not the colour, and that the colour had kept his crew calm when the bell buoys went quiet.

Ada pinned the letter above the drawing table and did not tell Harrod. Some evenings she sat with the lamp turned low and painted the same small cloud again on the back of a spoiled sheet, pink running into blue, until the south point drew her eye the way it always had.
