Geometric bow and arrow on a forearm
Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A bow and arrow sit at the centre of a geometric design, with an arrow shaft running vertically through overlapping circles, triangles and hexagonal lines. Fine black linework and dotted accents form the outline, with no shading or colour. The tattoo fills the forearm, with blurred flash sheets and drawings visible in the background.

Ada Wren had been sent to the walled garden at Hollin Court to find the true centre of the old orchard, because Mr Pell, the head gardener, said the apple rows had been planted by someone who could not count. She carried a brass compass, a ball of waxed twine and the bow her brother had left behind when he went to sea, though she had no use for the bow and kept it only because it leaned so well against the shed.

Her method was simple. She drove a stake at each corner of the plot, ran the twine between them and watched where the lines crossed. The first attempt put the centre beneath the potting bench. The second put it in the pond, where a heron stood on one leg and seemed to judge her. On the third morning she pinned lining paper to the shed door and drew the plan properly: six sides for a hexagon, a circle fitted inside it, and a single line running through the middle like a shaft, with dots marking every place the lines met.
Pell came out with his tea and studied the drawing for a long time. He said the orchard had been laid out by a man who loved triangles, and that the old sundial in the corner had been moved twice since the war. Ada said the sundial was the point, and that the arrow only needed to find it. Pell snorted, but he went to fetch his spade all the same.
At noon she stood on the last stake and watched the shadow of the twine slide across the grass. It crossed the ring of dots Pell had swept clear years ago and stopped at a stone no bigger than a loaf. Pell knelt, scraped the moss away and found a brass plate with the year the apples went in and a small arrow cut beside a name nobody at Hollin Court remembered. Ada wrote the measurements in pencil on the back of the drawing and let her tea go cold.
