Compass star mandala design
Geometric · Black and grey · Flash
A pen drawing of a bold four-point compass star at the centre, layered over a circular mandala of petal shapes filled with curled filigree and small dotted details. Linework is fine and even, with solid black areas on the star points and open line work in the mandala. The design is drawn in black ink only on cream paper, with small compass-style marks scattered around the edges and a pen visible at the top.

Grandad Ned kept his brass compass on the windowsill of the packing shed, between a jar of rusted nails and a photograph of a horse nobody could name. Every August he tapped the glass twice before he walked out into the trees, as if the needle might be asleep.

This year the Discovery block was mine to pick, and by six o'clock the storm had come up over the Downs so fast that the sky went the colour of bruised plums. The rows fanned out from the old well in rings, petal after petal of grey-green trunks, and every one of them looked like the last. I'd left my torch in the van. The thunder was close enough to rattle the crates.
I pulled the compass from my apron pocket and held it flat on my palm, the way he'd shown me when I was six. The needle swung and settled. North was behind the hedge where the cider barn stood, which meant the shed lay south-east, past eleven rows and a gap where the wind always got through. I counted them out loud, touching each trunk with the tips of my fingers, and the bark was still warm from the day.
The rain found me at row nine. When I reached the shed the door was already open and the lamp was lit, and someone had wiped the window clean enough that I could see the compass glinting on the sill. I tapped the glass twice. It felt daft and it felt right, and I laughed until the thunder drowned me out.
