Compass and scrollwork arrow design
Neo-trad · Black and grey · Flash
The drawing shows a compass rose at the centre of a round medallion, with an arrow passing diagonally through it and a length of rope looping over the top and right edge. Acanthus-style scrolls and leaves fill the lower and side areas, and a small compass-point motif sits at the upper right. The design is rendered in fine brown linework with soft shading on a pale paper background.

The chart table in the back of the Mercy Jane smelled of wet rope and the tin of lamp oil my father swore by, and I was sixteen the summer I learned to read a compass by lantern light while the rest of the crew slept off the Dogger Bank fog. My father never spoke of the needle. He tapped the glass with one thick finger and said the arrow on the bezel was the only honest thing aboard, because it pointed where you told it and not where you wished.

We were bound for Lindisfarne with a hold full of slate, and the wind had gone round to the north-east in a way I did not like. I wanted to turn for the Farne lee. He wanted to hold the line. I remember the scroll-work of the brass housing catching the lamp, every curl and leaf of it dark with old salt, and how I thought it looked like something a woman would have wanted on a ring rather than on a binnacle. He said the leaves were there so the hands would have something to hold in a gale. I did not believe him until the spray came over the bow and I grabbed the nearest curl and it held.
We kept the line. At first light the fog lifted off the water like a lid, and there was the Lindisfarne light, exactly where the needle had said it would be. My father looped the spare rope over the rail, coiled it neat as a clock spring, and said nothing at all. I have kept that coil for forty years. When my own daughter asks me which way is north, I hand her the arrow and let her find out for herself.
