Compass symbol inside a runic ring on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A large circular tattoo shows an eight-armed compass-style symbol with smaller branching marks at its ends, enclosed by a ring of angular runic characters. The linework is crisp and the shading is soft and mottled, giving the centre a worn stone texture. The design is entirely black and grey and fills most of the frame against plain skin, with a plastic sheet visible at the edges.

Sigrid had walked the whole coast road from Hvalfjörður with the sea-stone in her apron pocket, and by the third day her thumb had worn a shine into it. The stone was flat and grey, scratched on one face with a ring of crooked letters and a cross of eight arms, each arm branching at its end like a bare birch. Her brother had carved it the winter before he sailed. He had said it would turn toward home whatever the weather did, and she had laughed at him, and then the boat did not come back.

On the fourth morning the fog came down thick over the moor, and she could not find the sheep track, nor the cairn, nor the sound of the river. She stood still as her grandmother had taught her and took the stone out. It was cold, and then it was warm, and the arms of the cross seemed to lift from the surface like frost leaving glass. The branching ends swung one way, then slowly the other, and she turned until the marks sat square with the wind on her left cheek.
She walked most of the day with her eyes on the stone and her feet in the heather. Near dusk the fog thinned, and there below her was the turf roof of the farm, smoke rising straight up in the still air, and a lamp in the window that someone had lit early.
Her brother was not in the house. But the lamp was his, the table was laid for two, and on the sill lay a second stone, the twin of hers, scratched with a fresh cross that had one arm bent askew. She understood then that he had been walking too, turning his own stone toward her all through the grey days.
