Compass and rose on a shoulder

Realism · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

A detailed compass with a ringed bezel and a starburst dial sits in the centre, with a large shaded rose and several leaves curling around its left and top edges. The linework is clean and the shading is smooth, with strong contrast on the metal rim and soft greys across the petals. The skin is photographed from behind and above in a warm-toned indoor setting, with the tattoo filling most of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Her father's compass would not point north any more, not since the summer the wall came down on the eastern side of Harrowgate. It swung instead toward the old keep, where the ivy had taken the stairs and nobody went after dark. Mariam carried it there in her apron pocket, wrapped in a strip of oilcloth, because the miller had said the needle only lied to people who were looking for something they had already lost.

The keep had a rose growing through its hearth. It was a wild thing, pale at the edges, and it had been planted, the miller said, by a lord who wanted something to remember his wife by before he married again. Mariam knelt at the cold grate and set the compass on the flagstone. The needle trembled, turned once, and settled on the stem. Under the soil there was a box of tin, and inside the box a letter, folded small, in a hand she knew from the ledgers her father kept at the mill.

She read it twice. It was not from a lord. It was from her father, dated the winter before he drowned, and it said only that the needle would always find the rose, and that he had hidden the mill's silver among its roots so she would not have to sell the mill. She laughed, then, sharp and short, because the silver was there, and the rose had been there the whole time, and she had walked past it every Sunday of her life.
