Pocket watch with scrollwork on upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A detailed pocket watch with an ornate bow, numbered dial and hands sits at the centre of the design. Fine shading gives the case and dial a metallic, three-dimensional finish, and acanthus-style scrolls and leaves wrap around the watch. The image is a close, angled view of the arm, with the tattoo filling most of the frame against a softly blurred background.

The hands had stopped at twenty past seven, and Marit Solvane knew the king would ask for the hour before he asked for his breakfast. She held the watch up to the lamp in the cold back room of the workshop, turning it so the scrolled case caught the light. Acanthus leaves curled off the rim like something growing out of the silver, and the bow, a ring of thorned fronds, sat heavy between her finger and thumb.

Her father had made it the winter before the harbour froze, for a man who never came back to collect it. Marit had kept it in the drawer beneath the bench for eleven years, because the dial was a pale, almost pink silver and the numerals were so black and certain that she could never bring herself to file them. Now the steward had sent a boy with a note: the watch must run by the next bell, or the palace would send to the city for someone else.
She found the fault in the small hours, a hairline crack in the balance wheel no longer than an eyelash. Mending it meant lifting the old regulator, and the regulator had her father's initials scratched into its underside. Marit sat with the loupe at her eye until the window turned grey over the harbour, then she took the tweezers and did it anyway, because a thing made carefully ought to be allowed to keep time.
At noon the king turned the watch over in his large, careless hand and listened. The second hand swept round the small dial at its base, steady as a pulse. He said nothing about the hour. He looked at her, then at the leaves wrapped around the case, and said the thing had been stopped for a long time and did not seem to mind starting again. Marit walked back to the harbour with her fingers smelling of oil and the silver still warm from his palm.
