Compass breaking through cracked skin

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A detailed compass with a glass face, ornate dial and needle sits within a rounded metal case. Cracks spread outward from the compass across the skin, giving the impression of a hole torn open to reveal it. The shading is soft and highly contrasted in greys and black, with fine detail in the dial markings and the pointer.

Then the cracks ran outward in fine grey lines, like frost spreading across a windowpane, and a draught came through them smelling of salt and wet bracken. She pressed her palm to the wall and felt it give, soft as bread.

Behind the plaster was not brick but a round brass case, warm and ticking, and the glass face inside was clouded with a sea mist that moved when she breathed on it. The needle swung, hesitated, and settled firmly toward the gap in the wall. Ida took the old leather satchel from its hook, pulled on her boots, and stepped through into a country where the roads had always been drawn in ink on the back of her own hand.
