Constellation tattoo on the back of a hand
Fine line · Hand · Colour · Photo
A constellation of dark dots joined by thin glowing lines runs across the back of a hand, with the largest group near the knuckles and a longer chain stretching toward the wrist. The linework is fine and even, and the lines appear pale blue against the skin under a blue-toned light. Two rings sit on the fingers and the composition is centred on the tattoo.

The ferry was already backing off the slip when Ada Penhallow came down the quay at a run, a rolled chart clamped under one arm and a pencil behind her ear. Her father, at the wheel, shouted that the tide would not wait for a girl who could not tell a plough from a kettle. She threw the rope aboard, jumped, and landed with the chart still dry.

Out past the Mare's Teeth the sky was clear for once and the stars lay thick as salt. Ada had learned them from a book with a cracked spine that had been her mother's. Her father swore by the hunting dog, the long chain of lights running north, because a man could steer by a dog when the lighthouse was hidden in fog. Ada kept sketching the hare that lay under the dog's feet, which nobody else on the boat could ever make out.
Halfway across, the wheelhouse lamp failed and the deck went black. The sea was alive with blue fire, every wave breaking in a spill of cold light. Ada knelt by the rail, held up her hand, and traced the hare she had inked there that morning: a bent line for the ears, a row of dots for the haunch, a tail that ran down towards the wrist. Against the sky, her knuckles were the only thing a man could see, and her father, squinting from the wheel, took his bearing from them.
They made the harbour wall by the hare. Her father never admitted it. The next morning, though, he came to the kitchen table with his own hand held out flat and asked her, very gruffly, whether she had the right pen for it.
