Constellation tattoos on upper arm and forearm

Fine line · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

Two arms are shown close together, each with a constellation tattoo drawn in fine black dotted and solid lines linking small star points. The星 backgrounds are soft washes of blue, teal, pink and purple with splashes and bursts of ink spreading beyond the lines, plus small white star highlights. The colour ink dominates the composition, and the two designs sit on the upper arm and forearm with a grey top visible behind them.

Dear Thessaly, the ink you sent from Rhodes arrived crusted at the rim, so I have ground it again with gum and river water and it has come up the colour of a bruised plum. Do not scold the carter. He spent three days under rain on the quay with a mule that had opinions.

I have been painting the night for Captain Aristeas, though he insists on calling it a chart. Last month he showed me his grandfather's drawing: seven points bent like a ladle, and a tail of stars trailing off the handle. He wanted the lines fine as hair and black as pitch, so a man at the stern could follow them by lamplight. I drew them with a reed pen and a steady hand. Then came the wash, blue first, then teal from the copper, and where my brush shook I let the colour bloom and spit, so the sky looked as if it were breathing.

The captain stood over me and said it was too wild, that the sea would take the stars and leave only the ink. I told him the stars were always wild and only the lines were ours. He grunted, paid me in dried figs, and then asked for a second pattern for his mate, a pentagon of stars like a fishing weir, with a splash of rose at its foot for the dawn.

Write back soon and tell me whether the ink holds on linen the way it holds on papyrus. Your brother, Nikandros.
