Purple orb in a geometric triangle on forearm

Geometric · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A purple watercolour orb sits inside a fine black outline of a triangle, with thin crossing lines and small dots extending from the shape. Soft pink, purple and teal washes bleed out around the circle and the upper point of the triangle. The tattoo is centred on the outer forearm against a plain light background, with the rest of the arm and a white top visible.

Dear Tomas,

The snow has sealed the pass since Tuesday, so the carrier will not be back before the thaw, and I have nothing to do but finish this. Mrs Halloran keeps the inn with her two sons and a dog called Brisket, and she has let me have the back room above the bread oven, which is the only warm place in the valley. Everything smells of woodsmoke and wet wool.

You asked in your last letter whether the glass ball we pulled from the scree was anything more than a bauble. I have been turning it over every evening by the fire. It is no bigger than a plum, and when the lamp is behind it the inside clouds up violet in the middle, fading to a thin rinse of rose at the edges, as if someone had dropped ink into milk and stopped the hand before it spread. Three triangles were scratched around its neck in a line, with small dots between them, which the old surveyor said were benchmarks for the stars.

Mrs Halloran's youngest says it is a moon that fell out of the sky in the wrong season. I told him that was nonsense, and he reminded me that I had said the same about the mountain last winter, and then the mountain did not move. So I write to you, who will tell me plainly if I am a fool.

I am not sending it down until I know. If you come up in spring, bring the good calipers and a loaf from the Hollow Bakery, and we will measure it properly and see where the lines meet. Mrs Halloran has promised to keep the stove lit.

Yours in the cold, Eilidh
