Origami crane with rainbow splashes on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A black linework outline of a folded origami paper crane sits on the forearm, with its wings and body built from straight geometric facets. Behind the outline, loose watercolour-style splashes in red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple spread outwards. The skin is smooth and the background is dark, which keeps the colour splashes and the crisp black lines easy to see.

Wren,

Don't scold me for the flight log margin. The hydroponics crew lost a tank of beet dye yesterday, red and orange and a yellow that stains your nails for a week, and Oyelaran swept the spill with a rag and then asked nobody what to do with it. I took the rag. I wrung it into a shallow tray and dipped the sheets I'd saved from the requisition stack, and they took the colour the way a sky takes weather.

Then I folded. You know my hands. Every crease is a fact about the ship: the hull plates, the spare cable, the number of breaths we've taken since the last cleaning cycle. The wings are straight because the printer only gives us flat stock, and nothing curves on a station unless somebody bends it. When I laid the finished bird on the galley table, the splashes ran past its edges onto the steel, and for once nobody came to scrape them off.

Here's the part you won't like. I'm sending the crane out on the morning supply run, tucked under the seal of the water crate. Inside its body I've pencilled the coordinates of the old greenhouse, the one with the tap that still runs cold. You'll know the way. Go on your own. Take the second red sheet I saved for you, and when you find the tap, drink first, then tell me how it tastes.

Love, Tess
