Cornflowers on a forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A diptych shows a stylised bouquet of blue cornflowers with dark green stems, leaves and buds on the forearm. The left photograph is a wider view of a person in a dark green jumper with clasped hands, and the right is a close crop of the tattoo. The flowers use solid blue and violet fills with lighter blue highlights, and the leaves shade from green to yellow-green.

Mind the gate, it sticks in August the way my brother sticks to a lie. Now, the blue ones. Walter Pell's wheat ran right up to the lane that summer, and the cornflowers came up through it as if someone had paid them to. Nobody sowed them. They just arrived, the way bad news does, all at once and too pretty to argue with.

Mary Pell wanted them for the stall at Carrow Cross market, and Walter wanted the back field for himself, so they struck a bargain over the kitchen table. Whoever brought in the bluest stems before the binder came round would have the field's share of the barley money. Their boy Tom took it on, a penknife in one pocket and a jam jar in the other. He cut each stem low, so the flowers kept their dark green leaves and the little buds still shut tight like fists.
He came home with eleven stems and the jar water had gone the colour of a wet slate. Mary held one up to the window and said it was the bluest thing she had ever seen in a grown man's field. Walter said it was a weed. They argued until the lamp guttered, and neither of them ever admitted who had won.
When the binder came, Walter cut round one stem by the hedge and left it standing. I asked him why, and he said it was for the bet's sake. So when people ask me who won, I tell them about the field, and the field tells you nothing, which is how a field ought to be.
