Coral poppies and peony on a forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A forearm tattoo of coral-red poppy-style flowers, a pale cream peony and a pink rosebud, joined by green leaves and stems. The shading is soft and smooth, with fine detail in the petals, centres and foliage. The three panels show the same arm from different angles, with the design wrapping from the elbow side towards the wrist.

The coral had come out wrong again, too orange, like a poppy left overnight in a lorry. Edie tipped the pan and watched the madder bloom slide off the spoon. "Use the lake," Mr Haskett called from the potting shed, not looking up from his seed trays. "Madder fades if you rush it."

The catalogue wanted the plates by Friday: four poppies, a cream peony with its heavy head bowed, and a single rosebud for the back cover. Edie had painted peonies for eleven winters and never got the cream right. Cream, Haskett said, was only the colour the light left behind. She laid it on thin and lifted it with a damp sable until the petals looked like they might tear.
The rosebud she did last, at dusk, when the greenhouse glass turned to mirror. Haskett's wife had sent a note in a biscuit tin: his hands shook now, could Edie finish the leaves. So she did the leaves, green from verdigris and a touch of gamboge, veined with a single hair of brush.
When the plates went off in the post, the printer wrote back about the peony, asking who had painted the petals so the edges seemed to breathe. Edie kept the proof. Haskett kept the poppies. Neither of them mentioned that the peony was the only flower in the set painted from memory, from the old bush by the gate that had died the winter before the nursery sold.
