Forget-me-not sprig on a forearm

Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A sprig of forget-me-not flowers with pale blue five-petalled blooms, yellow centres, green stems and small unopened buds. The petals use soft blended shading and light highlights for a painterly, slightly realistic finish. The stems wind diagonally across the skin against a plain, out-of-focus background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit down, sit down, the lot of you, and mind the sawdust, it's all that's left of the big top. You want the story of Nell Fairweather's flowers? Then hush. Back in the drought summer, Harrow and Lusk's Travelling Marvels had three camels, one lion who wouldn't roar, and a strongman called Teodor who could still lift a pony but couldn't recall his mother's face.

Every evening before the parade, Nell sat on the caravan steps with a tin of paints and painted forget-me-nots on the wrists of anyone who'd pay a penny. Pale blue petals, a yellow eye in each one, a green stem running off up the arm like it had somewhere to be. She painted them so true that folk swore the flowers would fade with the sweat of a working night. They never did. Nell said that was the trick of it. You only had to be remembered once.

Then the ringmaster sold the wagons to a man from Leeds, the lion died in October, and Nell went off to the coast with the last of the money knotted in her stocking. Years passed. A letter came to the empty winter quarters, written on the back of a fire-eater's poster. It said only this: the buds are opening on the Chapel Street wall, come and see.

Teodor went. He found the whole length of brick painted over in sprigs, each bloom with its yellow heart, and a brass plate beneath that read: for the ones who forgot the circus, and the ones who never did. He pressed one thumb to a petal, and it was still tacky with paint, and he stood there in the rain until he could say her name.
