Corset and roses on the lower back
Neo-trad · Back · Mixed · Photo
A large tattoo of a laced corset covers the lower back, with a grey lace and floral pattern on the panels and red ribbon laced down the centre. Red roses with green leaves sit on either side at the base, and a red bow is tied at the bottom. The shading is soft and realistic, and the colour is mainly red and green against grey, with the wearer's jeans visible at the bottom of the frame.

Dear Ada, you asked in your last letter whether Mrs Hollis truly laces her own stays, and I can tell you she does, every morning, before the girl comes up with the hot water. I watched her through the crack in the dressing room door on Tuesday. She pulls the red ribbon through each eyelet with two fingers, slow as a surgeon, and she never once looks at the mirror.

The order came from the Assembly Rooms, a panel of grey net worked with climbing briar and tiny flowers, the same pattern as the lace on your mother's christening cap. Mr Penrose wanted the roses at the hem to be the deep red of the Hollis garden, the ones that bled all over the south wall last June. I stitched the bow myself, four loops and two long tails, and it sat so proud at the base that Mrs Hollis laughed out loud, which I had not heard her do since the spring.
Saturday is the wedding. The bride has asked for the laces pulled tight enough to hold the whole evening up, and I told her the ribbon would give a little by the second dance. She said that was the point of ribbon.
I have packed the tin of pins and the spare length of red silk. If the lace snags on the church steps, send word by the carrier and I will come on the early coach. Burn this letter once you have read it, as I have burned the drafts of my own.
