Corset laces and bow on the ribs
Realism · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a laced corset wrapping around the side of the torso, with crossing ribbons and a bow at the centre. The linework is fine and the soft grey shading gives the ribbons depth and volume. The photo is taken straight on, with the tattoo filling the middle of the frame and jeans and a white chest of drawers visible around the edges.

Nobody at Lowfold Farm had laced a stay since the autumn the bull got into the seed barley, and by the first hard frost of that winter the kitchen smelled of wet wool and old candle grease. Aunt Sarah said the house needed binding. She took the long ribbon from the chest, black as a rook's wing, and went out into the yard where the snow had drifted to the top of the gate.

Her work was to cross the ribbon round the barn, over and under the timber ribs, pulling each pass tight until the boards groaned. Every crossing made the wind drop a little. Her nephew Tom held the lantern and counted the loops aloud, because counting kept the cold out of his fingers, and when he reached nine she tied the bow at the middle, a double loop with two tails that hung down like a pair of ears.
Three nights passed. On the fourth the ribbon began to slacken at the top, and Sarah said a stay always does that when someone inside is pulling against it. Tom went out with the lantern to check and found the ribbon wet with thaw, the bow sagging, and a single fox print leading from the gate to the back door where the ribbon ran over the step.
He tightened the bow with his thumb, the way his aunt did, and the wind came round the north side of the house and found nothing to push against. In the morning the drifts had gone, and the ribs of the barn stood straight against a sky the colour of pewter.
