Abstract geometric triangles on a forearm

Geometric · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows an abstract arrangement of overlapping triangles and angular shapes, with thin black lines extending downward like drips. Grey shading sits within the upper shapes, while soft blue washes add colour to the centre and left edge. The design is centred on a forearm against a plain, light skin tone, with a patterned maroon shirt and a tiled floor in the background.

The rain has been coming off the spruce for three days, and by the second night the drips have found their old runnels down the flank of the charcoal clamp. You kneel in the wet clay of the clearing above Hollin Ash with your sleeves rolled, working the last of the blue pigment into the cracks of the lime-washed hood. Down in the valley the village lamps are going out one by one, the way they always do once Mrs Pruett's dog stops barking at the dark.

Tobias Merrow built the clamp with three slate roofs stacked at slant angles, so the smoke would find its own way out and never pool in the hollow. He said the grey triangles were for the draw, not for looks. You thought him a fusspot until you watched the first hard rain run down the slates and separate into threads, each one falling on its own line like a plumb weight, and you understood he had been pointing at something he could not say aloud.

On the third night the wind swings east and the smoke begins to sit low. You climb the hood with the iron bar and lift the top slate. Inside, under the oilcloth where Tobias kept his tallies, you find a folded note in his square capitals: RAIN DOES WHAT RAIN DOES. KEEP THE SIGHTLINE, NOT THE SEAM.

At dawn the clamp breathes out clean and grey. You wash your hands in the stone trough while the blue runs off your knuckles into the ditch, and the thin black lines still cling to the inside of your wrist where the wet has dried them, falling toward the water.
