Corset lacing tattoo on the chest

Realism · Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A black and grey tattoo of a corset with cross-laced ribbon and metal eyelets runs down the centre of the chest, ending in a tied bow at the base. The ribbon is shaded with soft greys and highlights to give it a three-dimensional, realistic look. A small character tattoo sits to the side, and a cream lace bra is visible at the edges of the frame.

The twine slipped twice before Ruth got it to hold, so she punched a fresh eyelet through the cardboard with the awl and started again. Behind her the second oven ticked as it cooled, and the window over the sink was still black enough to show her own reflection with a streak of flour across one cheek.

Her mother had laced boxes this way for thirty years at the same steel bench, crossing the string up the side of each lid, over and under, pulling each loop until the card creased inward. Nobody had ever asked why. The shop on Tanner Street sent its cakes out on the six o'clock van, and a loose box meant a dropped tier, a sunk sponge, a bride crying at the church gate.

The wedding order sat under the flour bin with its ticket pinned to the corner: three tiers, lemon and elderflower, collection by seven. Ruth crossed the last strand, drew it tight, and felt the cardboard give and then hold. She thought of her mother doing the same thing at this bench the morning before the funeral, muttering that everything wanted a firm hand to keep its shape.

She tied the bow last, two loops pulled even, the tails trimmed square with the shears. Outside, the sky over the car park had turned the colour of dishwater, and the van's headlamps swung across the shutters. Ruth lifted the box, felt it sit solid in her palms, and carried it to the door, where the bow lay neat on the lid like something done properly.
