Corset lacing and red ribbon on lower back
Realism · Back · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows a corset with silver, heart-shaped eyelets and red and black laces crossing down the centre, finished with a large red bow at the base. A red ribbon banner beneath carries French script that is partly legible. The shading is smooth and dimensional, with highlights on the metal eyelets and soft shadows under the laces, and the red ink contrasts with the grey and black tones.

Marthe had been lacing the same silver eyelets for thirty years, and she knew by the weight of the cord whether a bodice would hold. On Coëtmor the women sewed for the mainland shops in winter, when the boats stopped running and the wind came off the Atlantic like a blade.

The order came in October from a dressmaker in Quimper: twelve corsets in black sateen, each with heart-shaped eyelets, the laces run in red silk dyed with madder from Marthe's own garden. Her nephew Yann carried the bolts up the lane and asked why the hearts were so small. She told him a heart is only as big as the hand that closes it.
The last corset was for Aliénor, the schoolmaster's daughter, who was to marry a sailor named Gwenn in the spring. He had written to her from Brest in a hand that leaned badly to the right. Aliénor asked for something to go beneath the lacing, so Marthe stitched a red ribbon banner along the hem: à jamais, and below it a line of smaller words the girl would not translate for anyone. Marthe pricked her thumb twice doing it and said nothing.
On the wedding morning the cord would not draw true. Marthe saw that she had threaded the last eyelet backwards, so the bow sat at the spine instead of the waist. She could have unpicked the whole run, but the church bell was already ringing across the water. She tied the bow where it sat, and Aliénor laughed and turned to show it off, the red knot holding her steady as the gulls wheeled over the harbour.
