Dotwork lotus mandala on the chest
Dotwork · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey tattoo of a symmetrical lotus mandala sits centrally on the chest, beneath a white bra. The petals and leaves are built from fine stippled dots that create shading, with bold outlines defining the outer layers. The image is a close, front-on crop with even lighting and the design filling the centre of the frame.

The frost came in the night, and by morning every pane in the dairy had grown its own small pattern. Gran would have called it stippling. I called it a waste of an hour, because the cows still needed bringing in and the yard was a skating rink under the gate. But I stood with the churn steaming at my feet and looked at the window until my breath gave out.

Behind the feed sacks in the old tack room I found her tin. Under a fold of sacking lay a card with a lotus drawn in pencil, each petal a ring of pinholes where she had pricked it through, and a dense scatter of pin marks for every shadow. I counted three hundred and eleven holes, because counting was the only thing that kept my hands steady that winter after Dad. The pattern was for a lace collar she never finished, meant for a wedding in a year nobody remembers now.
I carried the card and a pin up to the kitchen table and laid a folded tea towel beneath it. Each prick took a breath. By the third hour the lotus had leaped off the card and into the cloth, petals opening where the lamp caught them. The kettle boiled twice and went cold beside me, and my fingers ached in a way that felt almost like company.
When I finally lifted the towel, the light through the window had turned grey and the frost had melted to beads on the glass. The holes had joined into one shadowed bloom that looked less like a flower than a small, stubborn sun. I put the pin back in the tin. Tomorrow the cows would still need bringing in, and I would take the towel out to them folded inside my coat.
