Corset lacing tattoo on the ribs

Realism · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A photograph of a tattoo showing a corset lace-up with sheer black ribbon crossing between silver-grey eyelets, ending in a black bow near the hip. The ribbon and metal eyelets are rendered with soft grey shading and highlights, giving a dimensional look against the skin. The tattoo fills most of the frame along the side of the torso, with a dark top and a blurred studio background behind.

The ribbon had gone grey at the ends from the wash water, so Ada Rook threaded it again through the eyelets while Mrs Pell held the stays flat against the wardrobe door. There were sixteen eyelets, pewter-coloured and bought by the gross from a man in Leeds who never sent the same order twice. Ada crossed the black silk over and under, drawing each pair snug until the lacing made a dark ladder up the cloth, and the sea wind pushed at the lace curtains as if it wanted in.

Mrs Pell had opinions about the lodgers. The Halloran girl came down late for breakfast, the commercial gentleman in the front room kept a bottle under his bed, and the theatre company had paid for three weeks and stayed for six. None of that was Ada's business. Her business was the bow at the bottom, which had to sit exactly over the hip so the stage lights would not catch it, and which had to come undone with a single tug from the loose end, because nobody in a hurry ever had time for a second knot.

On the last morning the tide was out and the boarding house smelled of kippers and wet coal. Ada went up with the box to collect the stays, and found the room already empty, the bed stripped, the window pushed wide. On the washstand lay the ribbon she had trimmed off the night before, neatly coiled, with one eyelet still threaded through its end. Ada picked it up and pulled the loose end. The whole lacing slid free in one long hiss, exactly as it was meant to, and she stood there a while holding it, listening to the gulls over the harbour.
