Brush stroke swirl across hip and side

Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A bare side view of a torso and hip shows a large abstract tattoo of sweeping brush strokes that rises from the side of the ribs and curves down over the hip to the upper thigh. The strokes use soft grey wash and dense black ink, with feathered, tapered edges that suggest a single fluid movement. The design is entirely black and grey and is set against a pale wall, with the strokes framing the curve of the body.

Nobody asks Agnes Pell why she never lifts the brush mid-stroke. They ask about the boats, mostly, because she paints the names on the hulls of every vessel that leaves Crowle Quay, and they want to know whether the paint will hold against the salt. It will. She tells them the trick is not in the paint but in the wrist, which must stay loose as a rope that has forgotten it was ever tied.

The autumn her husband Tom sailed on the Marigold, she was up a ladder at the harbour wall lettering the bow with his name, because the owner had insisted on it being bigger than the others. The wind came round from the north-east and drove the sea up the slipway. She dipped, pulled one long stroke from the stem towards the wale, and when the boat heeled in the swell she did not lift. The line ran past the paint, down the stone and into the green water, and kept going until the tide had taken all of it.

The Marigold came in on the Thursday with a torn mainsail and all four men alive. Tom was the one who saw the mark on the wall first and laughed until he had to sit on the quay. Agnes says the stroke was never meant to end, only to be finished by the sea.

She still keeps the brush in a jar on the windowsill, bristles grey at the tips. Some mornings she takes it out and draws one line across a scrap of board without lifting, just to remember how the water pulled.
