Fine line · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A vertical, single-needle style design of black linework sits centrally on the chest, above a black bra. It features stacked loops, a small spiral near the base, and dots at the top and bottom. The image is tightly framed, with hands holding up a dark grey top on either side of the tattoo.

Sit yourself down on that coil of rope, and mind the paint, it's still wet. You're not the first to ask me about the line that climbs up the river of a map, so let me tell it the way my grandmother told it to me, on this same deck, with the same kettle going.

Ferryman's boy in those days, Tomas Vell, sixteen and certain he knew every bend between Lowmoor and the sea. The river had other ideas. Below the old mill it split into seven channels, and each one looped back on itself like a dropped length of cotton, so a man could row all morning and find himself staring at his own wake. Tomas tried the first channel, then the second, and by dusk he had rowed the same stretch of reed three times, cursing the water and the willows and the heron that kept watching him as though he owed it money.
He sat down in the bow and wept, which my grandmother said was the first sensible thing he'd done all day. The water stopped moving then, and in the stillness he saw a single drop hanging off the oar, catching the last of the light. It fell, and where it struck it made a ring, and the ring spread and crossed the others until the whole surface was a spiral drawing him inward.
He followed it down into the eddy below the weir, where the current turned slow and deep, and at the very bottom of the coil the river let go of him. He came up on the far bank, dry as a heel of bread, with the lamp of the lock-house burning at the top of the hill like one dot of ink at the end of a page. He never found the seven channels again. He always said that was the point.
