The 9.14 had already gone when Ada Hollis came back along Platform Two for the third time, one glove off and a folded sheet pressed flat against her coat. I was sweeping the waiting room, and she asked, without any hello, whether anyone had handed in a letter. I said the lost property shelf was behind the ticket office, full of umbrellas and one stuffed owl, and she said she didn't want anything back. She wanted something sent.

She had written it that afternoon at her kitchen table, she told me, because her brother Frank was shipping out from Liverpool on the morning boat and she had said the wrong things at the wrong door. The letter ran in her looping hand, every line leaning forward as if it were in a hurry to reach him. At the bottom, underlined twice, were the words her mother used to say when the lamps went out: courage, dear heart. She had nothing to add beneath them.

I offered to take it to the sorting office myself on my bicycle, but she shook her head. "Post takes a week," she said. "Give it to the driver." So I carried it down to the guard's van on the late goods train, bound for the docks by midnight, and handed it up to a man in a grey cap who read the name on the front and nodded as though he'd carried a thousand like it.

Ada stood on the platform until the tail lamp was a red full stop in the dark. When I swept up later, I found a scrap of paper she'd torn from the bottom of the sheet, with the same line written again in pencil, pressed so hard it had gone through to the grain. I pinned it above the kettle in the porters' room, where it still is.
