Heart-shaped script quote design
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
A line-drawn design of handwritten script lettering set out in the shape of a heart on a plain white background. The words are written in flowing, thin black strokes with a slight calligraphic weight, and a hairline flourish extends from the top left and right of the heart. The composition is centred and fully black on white, with no shading or colour.

You have been at the windfalls since six, and the wasps have already found the ones split open on the grass. Your sleeves are rolled past the elbow and the crate by the ladder is half full. Tom's letter sits in your apron pocket, gone soft at the folds from being read on the back step, and you have not decided whether to answer it before the first frost or after.

Mr Pryce comes down the lane on his bicycle, calls across the wall that the cider press is booked for Thursday, and asks whether you have seen the Dawes boy with the second ladder. You say you have not. You do not say he is sitting at the far end of the rows with his cap over his face, because he was sent home from school for fighting and you promised his mother you would keep him busy until the brambles come in.
At noon you eat bread and cheese under the old Bramley, the way your father taught you, and cut a windfall across its middle with the small knife. Inside, the five seeds lie in their pale chambers, pressed close together at the top and tapering to a point below, so that the whole core looks like something drawn by a child who has been told what a heart is. You turn it on the cloth and wonder whether Tom would laugh at you for seeing it at all.
You take the pencil stub from your pocket and write on the back of the seed packet: come home when the leaves turn, and I will meet you at the gate with the good knife. Then you wrap the halved apple in the packet's waxed paper, tuck it into the envelope, and seal it before Pryce can come back up the lane. The post goes at four. The apple will be soft by then, and the seeds will show through the paper like a stain, and you will let them.
