Lion hearted girl handwritten script

Lettering · Black and grey · Flash

The image shows the handwritten phrase "lion hearted girl" in black ink on a plain off-white background. The letters are drawn in a loose, monoline script with a tall stroke on the L and d, and a long curved underline sweeps beneath the words. The design is in black and grey only, with no shading or colour, and the lettering fills the frame horizontally.

The gale off Skerrow Head has been tearing at the gallery rail since midnight, and you are the only one awake to hear the lamp grumble in its brass housing. Your father always said the lamp had a temper and only the keeper's hand could settle it. Tonight that hand is yours, because his lies upstairs with a fever and the relief boat cannot cross until the tide turns.

Mrs Penrose from the cottages climbs the spiral at two with a flask of tea and a face like wet slate. She tells you the Ellery boys went out in the cutter with the cracked tiller, and that half the village is saying the girl would never manage. You say nothing. You trim the wick, rub the Fresnel panes with the chamois you have worn thin, and count the seconds between flashes the way he taught you, out loud, under your breath.

At four the cutter's lamp shows low in the swell, then wavers, then steadies in the beam you have kept true. You never learn whether it was your hand or the glass that held it. By morning the Ellery boys are coming up the shingle path, soaked and grinning, and Mrs Penrose has already pinned a note to the lamp room door in her careful copperplate.

When the relief boat noses into the cove, your father is sitting up in bed, grey and furious at being kept from his own lamp. You hand him the logbook. Beneath the night's weather and tide, in pencil, you have written one more line that is not weather at all. He reads it twice, then laughs until he coughs, and taps the page with one shaking finger.
