The fog had been sitting on Carrick Holm since four, and the horn was still bellowing when Nell Pascoe found the first of the crabs on the landing steps. It was a big edible crab, its shell the colour of wet slate, one claw folded under it as if it had been carrying something and dropped it. She nudged it with her boot. It did not run. Her father had kept the light before her, and his father before him, and every log on the shelf in the watch room had the same entry for the same week of June: crabs at the tide line, thick as stones, moving inland in a slow grey river. Nobody had ever said why. Her father used to say the sea was only tidying its own mess. Nell wrote the count in the book, nineteen that morning and forty by noon, and then she stopped counting because her pencil kept slipping on the damp page.

By dusk the smoke had come in with the fog, a thin haze that clung to the gallery rail and curled over the lens housing. When she climbed to trim the wick, the crab from the steps was sitting on the sill of the lamp room window, claws raised as if to knock. Its shadow fell across the glass, and the great lens threw that shadow back at her, huge and jointed, a sign hung in the sky.

She turned the lamp up. The beam swept out over the water and found the dinghy she had been waiting for, one oar, rowing blind toward the reef. Nell pressed her palm to the cold glass and tapped twice, the way her father had taught her to signal the lifeboat. Outside, the crab lifted one claw and tapped back.
