Tribal swirl design on an upper arm
Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A large tribal-style tattoo covers the upper arm of a person wearing a dark sleeveless top, with the head and face out of frame. Bold black spirals and curved blades are overlaid on a fine crosshatched grid of grey shading that gives the arm a textured, dimensional look. Small areas of red ink highlight the edges of several curves, and the design runs from the shoulder down toward the elbow.

The frost came early that year and laid its grid over every pane in the Harrow farmhouse, so that old Mags Tulliver could not see the lane from her chair. Her son had taken the ewes up to the high pasture at the first snow and had not come back. Nobody blamed the weather. Everybody said the same thing: the wind had turned north and the thorn curls along the walls had tightened.

Her grandson Edwin, nine years old and too big for his boots, said he would go up with the lantern. Mags gave him a heel of bread and a length of red wool to tie to the gate. "Follow the swirl," she said. "The wind always goes round the hollow the way a dog turns before it lies down." He did not understand her, but he took the wool.
The hollow was white and still. Black brambles curled along the top of each stone wall, and where the ice had split the stone, rust showed red like a cut on a sheep's flank. Edwin walked the spiral three times, as she had told him, and on the third turn he found his uncle sitting against a hurdle with snow on his shoulders, cold but breathing, the ewes packed in behind him like a knot of wet wool.
They walked down together in the dark with the lantern swinging, and when they reached the gate the red thread was still tied there, bright as a coal. Mags untied it, folded it, and put it in the drawer with the other things that had brought men home.
