Cracked pocket watch and gears on upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A pocket watch with Roman numerals sits on the upper arm, its cracked glass and casing revealing a toothed gear that meshes with a stepped, ladder-like element below. Shading is smooth and highly detailed, giving the metal a three-dimensional, polished look with strong highlights and deep shadows. The tattoo is entirely black and grey, with large Roman numerals and a faded background of wing-like shapes filling the space around the watch.

Sit closer, the lot of you, and mind the lamp. You want to know why Harrow threw the chronometer over the side off the Cape? I'll tell it, though it's no tale for a sober man.

The watch was Cornish-made, brass gone dark at the edges, and it kept Greenwich time to the second for eleven years aboard the Sarah Quill. Old Abel Trewin kept it wound. Every noon he climbed the ladder to the poop, sighted the sun through his sextant, and called the hour down the hatch so the boys could set their glasses. Nobody else was permitted to touch it.

Then Rennick, the third mate, took it one night in the doldrums meaning to pawn it at Valparaiso. He dropped it on the capstan, and the glass split straight across the Roman numerals, right through the seven and the nine. Abel found the wheels still turning and the hands still moving, but he said a watch with a cracked face is a liar, and a liar at sea will drown you slow.

So at dawn he stood at the rail with the watch in his palm and waited for birds. The albatross came grey on grey, wings wide over our wake, and he followed them like a boy follows a fiddler. They led him to a reef no chart had ever shown us, and we slid past it in the first light with a fathom to spare. Rennick never saw a penny of pawn money, and Abel never again trusted anything with a crack in it, least of all himself.
