Pocket watch, compass and map on forearm

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A pocket watch with Roman numerals sits at the top of the forearm, with a faded world map behind it and a compass rose at the lower left. The watch and map use fine shaded detail and soft grey gradients, while the compass has bold, crisp linework. The image is a close, well-lit photo of the forearm against a tiled wall.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The snow had come in sideways overnight and buried the gate to the top field, so by half past three you were relying on the pocket watch to tell you how much light was left. It was your grandfather's, the Roman numerals rubbed pale at the edges, the minute hand always a shade behind where it should have been. You flicked the lid open with your glove between your teeth and squinted. Slow, as ever. Slow was the only speed it knew, and you had stopped trying to correct it years ago.

The compass was the other thing you trusted. It rode in the breast pocket of your coat, its needle wobbling until it settled on north, the same north Dad had marked in biro on the county map pinned above the range. That map had faded to the colour of weak tea, the coastline gone soft at the edges, and he had never once let anyone fold it. "Fold it and you lose the sea," he used to say, which made no sense to you then and less now.

Bramble, the collie, had already gone ahead, a dark shape dipping in and out of the drifts along the wall. You followed her tracks and the needle together, counting posts. Eleven from the corner, then the gap where the hawthorn had split in the gale. The gate was there under a hump of white, exactly where the map said it would be, and the watch, for once, had the time right: twenty past four, and the light going blue over the hill.

Behind you the kitchen window glowed yellow, Mum's shape moving across it. You stood at the gate with the compass warm in your palm and wound the watch one careful turn, then another, and felt it catch and start ticking against your fingers. It would be late again by morning. You would set it straight then, and walk back through the snow towards the light.
