Pocket watch and roses on an arm

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A pocket watch with numerals on its face sits within a twisted rope border, surrounded by shaded roses. The linework is fine and the shading is smooth, with strong contrast and soft greys across the watch case and petals. The photograph is a three-panel composite of the same arm from slightly different angles, with a yellow background.

The watch came up the lane in a man's coat pocket, wrapped in a handkerchief the colour of weak tea. Mr Hale never gave his name at our shop on the edge of Dunmere. He paid in coppers and asked whether the hands could be set to match the church bell. Mother said he was a poacher. I said nothing, because I had seen the chain wound twice round his fingers as if he were holding something that might bolt.

He came every Thursday for a month. The watch ran slow, so I took the back off with the fine screwdriver and found the balance wheel scored where it had been dropped on stone. Roses grew over the wall of the cottage where he lodged, heavy blooms going brown at the edges, and he would stand in the doorway looking at the dial as though the numerals were a road he had walked before and did not care to walk again.

On the last Thursday the wood beyond the orchard had gone the colour of pewter, and the rain came through the trees in grey ropes. He did not collect the watch. He left the handkerchief folded on my bench with a note that said only: keep it until the hour is right. I set it running at a quarter past four, the minute the lamp went out in the woods, and wrote the time on the tag in my best hand.

Nobody came back for it. The shop is a dry cleaner's now, and I still carry the watch on its chain, its face yellowed and its hands fixed where I first set them. Each evening I wind the crown, and each evening the lane fills with the smell of wet roses. I have never let it strike the hour he meant.
