Black and grey tattoo of cracked, fractured skin filled with handwritten words, covering the middle of a person's back.

Cracked skin with handwritten words on back

Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A large tattoo covers most of the upper and mid back, showing a fissured pattern that resembles splitting skin or earth. Within the cracks, handwritten words are inked in fine, uneven script, with hatched shading along the edges to give depth. The design is entirely black and grey and is centred on the back, with the subject's head and face out of frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You have been walking the rows since before light, counting the windfalls that have split open on the grass like cracked jugs. The ground between the Bramley trees has opened into a map of fissures, and your father's voice comes back to you from the summer you were nine: the earth is only a page, he said, and the weather writes on it.

Your grandmother kept the book in the dresser drawer under the tea caddy. Every dry August she filled a page with words she was afraid of and words she wanted: suspicion, luck, tired, awake, belove, perfect. She said saying a thing out loud in a drought made it either arrive or leave, and she never said which she preferred. You found the book on Tuesday, its spine soft as bread, and you read it standing in the back kitchen while the kettle ticked on the range.

On Thursday the cloud came over the ridge from the west, dark as a bruise, and you ran out between the trees with the book held against your chest like a hymn sheet. The first drops hit the cracks and hissed. You knelt and pressed your palm flat to the nearest fissure, and the water pooled in the grooves between the letters, filling the words from the bottom so that each one stood up dark and legible for a moment before it blurred.

By dusk the rows were black and glistening and the book was ruined, its pages swollen into a single wet slab. You left it on the windowsill to dry. In the morning the ink had run into the paper, and the only word still clear was the one at the bottom, which she had written last and pressed hardest: stay.
