Words arranged in a flowing shape on upper arm
Lettering · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo is made up of many lines of black words in mixed sizes and angles, arranged to form a flowing, shape-like outline across the upper arm. The lettering is crisp, with solid black ink and no shading, and the words are set at varied angles so they overlap in places. The photo shows the arm from the side against a dark green top, with a hand resting near the shoulder.

Tamsa had carried the ochre down from the high quarry since the first thaw, and every evening her hands came back red to the wrist. The old men at the cave mouth said a grinder's hands told the truth before her tongue did, so she kept them in her lap whenever the elders spoke.

Her father knapped flint on the shelf above the river. He worked with his back to the water and taught her the rule: strike once, read the chips, strike again. The chips lay in the grass like spilled paper rolls of pale light, and she gathered the sharp ones into a skin bag for the fire-makers. You could tell a good stone by the sound it made when it broke, he said, and a bad one by the silence.
The winter the river rose, a stranger came up the path with a limp and a spear, asking which cave kept a fire that would not go out. Tamsa did not answer him. She ground her ochre fine as flour and watched him sit by the embers, watched him cough and stare at the water, and when her mother asked what he had seen, Tamsa said only that he had walked a long way to find nothing.
That night she went down to the river with a lamp and tipped the ochre into the current. The red spread like a wound running the wrong way, and she thought of all the things she might tell her mother in the morning. In the end she told her only that the stone was good. Her mother nodded. Some things, Tamsa decided, were better left for the river to carry further than any girl could walk.
