Crescent moon and sun in a geometric mandala

Geometric · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A black linework tattoo shows a crescent moon and a sun with closed-eye faces, set inside a teardrop-shaped geometric mandala with fine radiating lines and small dots. The linework is clean and even, with no shading or colour. The design is centred on the skin of the side of the torso, with a plaid shirt open at the edges of the frame.

Father has finally taken the brass dividers off the table, so I can write this on the good paper without him asking what it is for. The eclipse is due on Thursday and the whole of Crail has gone soft in the head about it. Mrs Lennie wants her grandson kept indoors with a smoked glass, and the minister has preached on it twice.

I have been drawing the sky for Father's almanac since the spring. He wants the moon and sun set inside a teardrop frame, every ray ruled by hand, with a small dot at each crossing so the printer can find his place. It takes me most of an evening to rule one. Last night I drew the moon with her face turned down and the sun with his eyes shut, because I could not bear to show them staring at each other across a sky that will not let them touch.

Father looked over my shoulder and said that was the trouble with me, that an almanac is meant to keep the heavens in order so nothing collides. I told him the drawing was not about order. He said nothing for a while, then tapped the point of the frame with his pipe stem and said it was the one place the lines could not wander off.

Thursday came and the sky went dark at quarter past ten. We stood on the harbour wall with the smoked glass and the whole village quiet, and for two minutes the sun was a thin bright ring around a black coin. I thought of your ship, and of you, and of the drawing. Come home before the next one. Mind the cold, and write me the day you see land. Your sister, Isla.
