Dotwork lotus on the chest

Dotwork · Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A black and grey lotus motif is centred on the torso, with a small bud at the top, a fine vertical stem, and a larger layered bloom below. The outlines are clean and single-weight, and the petals are filled with stippled dot shading that darkens toward their tips. The plain pale skin and the dark checked shirt on either side frame the tattoo in a symmetrical composition.

Dear Tomasz,

The lamp you asked about is finished, and I have hung it over the bench where you used to sit with your boots on the rung. Mr Halloran brought the bronze up from the wreck of the Ardent Mary, the one that went onto the Skerries in March, and it was black with sea salt. I spent three evenings with wire brushes and vinegar before the metal showed its colour again.

The shape came from the pendant lamp in Mother's kitchen, the one with the small bud at the top and the bloom beneath, hung on a single fine chain. I did not want to copy it exactly. I wanted the petals to look as though someone had breathed on them and the light had settled into the dark corners. So I drew them out on paper, then pricked each petal with a centre punch, row after row, dot against dot, heavier near the tips where the shadow would gather. My hand ached for a week. Mrs Penrose said I was mad to spend so long on something that would only sit in a window.

Yesterday the ferry's keeper came up the hill to collect a bill and stopped at the door to look at it. He said the dots made it look as though it was humming. I told him it was only the punch marks catching the lamplight, but I have been thinking about it since. Perhaps that is what a lamp is for, a thing that hums quietly while it waits for someone to come home.

Come home when the weather turns, and I will hang it in the window so you can see it from the water. Bring me the chain you promised. I have the hook ready.

Your sister, Nell
