Crescent moon mandala design
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
A hand-drawn crescent moon is filled with dense, symmetrical mandala-style patterns of curls, dots and petal shapes. A central ornate motif, resembling a lotus or butterfly, sits within the curve of the moon. The design uses fine black linework and stippled detail on a plain white background, with no colour.

You are up before the gulls on the Harrowgate field, the showmen still asleep in their vans, and the lamps of the waltzer hang dark above the wet grass. Your job is to check the rigging on the Starlight Wheel before the first gate opens at noon, and someone has left a note on the generator saying the big moon is peeling again.

Mrs Ada Pell was the only one who still drew by hand. She kept a tin of Indian ink and a steel nib in her caravan, and every spring she went over the painted panels of the rides with curls and dots that spread like the lace on a Sunday collar. She said a fair was only a dream somebody had put a price on, and the pattern was there to stop the dream wandering off before closing time.
The autumn her knuckles were too stiff for the ladder, she gave you the nib and a sheet of cartridge paper and told you to draw the moon on the hub of the wheel. You drew it badly three times, and she sniffed at each one and fed it to the stove. On the fourth attempt you let a lotus sit inside the hollow of the crescent, its petals opening towards the field, and she tapped the paper with one finger and said, there, now it knows where it lives.
Now you climb the ladder with a rag and a jar of paraffin and find the moon still there, faded to the grey of old pencil, its dots holding last night's rain. You wipe the grease from the bolts, screw in the bulb that has blinked all summer, and when the sun clears the hedge the crescent catches the light and throws its shadow across the grass like a hand reaching for the gate. You climb down and unbolt the turnstile, and wait for the first family to come through.
