A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

On Skerrin, the tide table hung above the range in the old signal house, and Ada Coull copied it out in black ink every winter. Her father had kept it in pencil, but pencil smudged in the damp, and the figures had to survive a winter of salt.

The island was small enough that the moon was the only neighbour who never came calling late. Every night she walked the sea wall with a torch and a tin of sugared almonds, counting the spring tides as they spread out from the new moon like the spokes of a wheel a child might draw. Where the water stood highest she marked a dot. Where it turned, she drew a teardrop, to remember the hour the sea argued with itself.

In March a stranger came off the ferry with a sketchbook and asked whether the island had a name for the shape the sea made at full moon. She said there was no name, only the table. He drew a circle, then a crescent inside it, and she watched his pencil fill the petals with swirls and small hatched marks until the page looked like a lit window. He left the drawing on the ferry step without saying goodbye.

That night the tide came higher than the table said. Ada stood on the wall with the sketch folded in her coat and watched the moon sit in the middle of the water like a bowl held out to be filled. She did not correct the table. Beside the date she made one dot, bigger than all the rest, and let the sea have its say.
