Ornate feather pen drawing

Black and grey · Flash

A single feather runs diagonally across the page, with its central quill drawn as a bold black line. The feather is filled with intricate doodled patterns, including swirls, dots, scallops, a small flower and rounded shapes. The work is done in black ink on white paper, with fine hatching and stippling creating texture and depth.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mara found the feather on the gallery rail after the gale had blown itself out, grey and sodden, a single primary wedged in the iron where the brass hand-rail had rusted through. She dried it on the stove and then, because her hands needed something to do while the tide turned, she began drawing on the back of the weather log with her fountain pen.

She started with the quill, a hard black line pressed until the nib spat. After that she let the rest come without asking it to be anything. Little scallops ran along the vane. Dots crowded near the base, then thinned like rain easing off. A flower sat low in the barbs, five petals and a centre full of stipple, the sort of thing her mother used to stitch on the corners of tea towels.

Her brother Aled came up the spiral stairs at two with a replacement mantle and stopped at the table. He did not say the drawing was pretty. He tapped the bottom curl and said the rocks off Carreg Ddu lay exactly that way at low water, a fan of black teeth in a bed of foam, and that he had seen the pattern from the boat that morning without knowing what it was.

Mara looked. The shapes matched. She had not meant the feather to be a chart, but the rounded blots in the lower vane were the rocks, and the swirl above them was the channel bending round. She marked the flower with a small cross and slid the log across the table. Outside, the beam swept the water and found only the tops of the waves, and for the first time in a month she did not feel she was keeping watch over nothing at all.
