Crescent moon of roses on upper back
Botanical · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A person with long dark hair is seen from behind, showing a crescent moon tattoo centred on the upper back. The moon is packed with shaded roses and smaller flowers, with the blooms and leaves following the curve of the crescent. The image is black and white, so the shading and tonal depth of the tattoo stand out against the skin.

You will laugh, but I still cut to the shape he gave them. Nine years he spent training those bushes around the broken arch of the keep, curving them into a sickle so that the moon rising over Harrow Tor would sit inside the bloom like a stone in a setting.

Yesterday the steward came up the stairs of the east tower asking whether the castle would be sold before spring. I told him I didn't know, which is true. The lease is with the trust in Carlisle and they write in a language I can't read. Still, I went up at dusk and watched the moon catch on the thorns, pale as a coin, and I thought how the roses never once asked whether they were meant to stay.
Don't worry about me. I've taken a cutting from the middle of the crescent, the one with three blooms still open, and wrapped it in wet sacking inside my coat. Mr Abernethy has agreed to let me plant it in the vicarage garden in Kendal, where the wall faces south and the moon will still come up over the fells.
Write soon, and tell Mother I have stopped swearing at the gate.
Yours in haste, Bess
