Dreamcatchers and feathers down the spine

Back · Black and grey · Photo

Two dreamcatchers hang one below the other along the spine, joined by a beaded cord and trailing feathers that fan out toward the lower back. Each hoop has a radiating flower-like centre and a finely shaded rope rim, with soft grey shading on the feathers. The photograph is black and white, with the head cropped out and the tattoo as the main focus.

Mrs Abernethy had a rule about the second floor: no guest was to come down to breakfast with gull feathers in their hair. Yet every morning in late August Ada found them on the stairs, grey and barred, caught in the banister spindles where the sea wind came up through the cracked skylight. She swept them into her apron pocket and said nothing, because the new lodger in number nine paid in cash and asked for nothing but the window facing the water.

He mended clocks in the arcade and came back each evening smelling of brass polish and salt. On the third night she found him at the kitchen table, bending a hoop of willow into a true circle and binding it with cord the colour of old rope. Beads of bone and blue glass rattled in a tin beside his elbow. 'My grandmother made these for the children,' he said, not looking up. 'To catch the bad dreams before they reached the bed. She never finished mine.'

Ada sat across from him and took up the spare cord without asking. They worked until the lamp guttered, running thread from the centre of the hoop out to its rim, the way the old woman's letter described. By dawn there were two of them, one wider than the other, joined by a beaded cord with feathers he had gathered from the sands tied along the bottom.

He hung the smaller one above the door of number nine and gave Ada the other. 'For whoever sleeps lightest,' he said. She carried it home to the room over the chemist's, where she had not slept properly since the winter. That night the tide came in loud against the groynes, and for once she did not hear it. In the morning the stairs were clean. A single grey feather lay on the mat, its point turned toward the open door, as though someone had already gone down to the water.
