Traditional style tattoo on the inner forearm showing mountains, birds, a red flower and leaves, with the words home is where the heart is.

Mountain scene with quote on forearm

Traditional · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A tattoo on the inner forearm shows two peaks with a dark animal or landscape shape between them, small birds in flight to the left, and a black leaf with a red flower to the right. The phrase home is where the heart is is lettered along the lower right edge. The linework is bold and black with grey shading in the peaks and figure, and the red flower adds the only colour.

Dear Tom,

The stag came down to the tarn again this morning, the one with the broken tine, and stood in the mist between the two peaks as if he owned the whole view. I held the dog by the collar and we watched him drink. Your mother would have wanted a sketch, but my hands are too stiff for pencils now, so you'll have to take my word for it.

The swallows left early this year, which Dad always said meant a hard winter. Only the rooks are still about, quarrelling over the top field as though they've paid rent on it. I cut the last of the red valerian from the wall by the gate and pressed a few into the old atlas with the cracked spine, the one you used to hide your comics in. It's still open at Norway. I thought you'd want to know that.

You wrote that your new flat has a window but no sky. I read your letter twice at the kitchen table, then put the kettle on and let it boil dry, which is not like me at all. Come up before the snow. The sampler by the door still says what it always said, home is where the heart is, and I've stopped pretending I don't mind that it's been proved wrong about you these two winters running.

The lamp is on in the porch. I'll leave it burning until you're in sight of the gate, and then I'll go and find the kettle.
