Crescent moon with lotus and gem drops
Neo-trad · Colour · Photo
A crescent moon in teal shading sits above a blue lotus flower, with black outlines throughout. Beaded chains in teal and dotted lines hang from the moon, with purple and pink teardrop gems and round beads along them. The design is centred on a plain background of skin with some redness, and the bold outlines and jewel-like shading are clearly visible.

The chain had snagged on the sill of the north window for three winters, and by the time Nell climbed up to free it the wind had worn the links the colour of pond water. Below her the courtyard was thick with nettles and the bones of a collapsed stair. Above, through the empty arch, the new moon hung thin as a fingernail over the sea.

The necklace had belonged to the old Countess, or so the caretaker said, a thing she had hung from the lantern hook so the whole coast would know when the moon was waxing. Nobody had lit that lantern since the roof came down. Nell worked the links loose with a hairpin, counting the purple drops as they came free, one, two, three, the pink ones dull with salt.
When the last drop came away, the chain slid through her fingers and dropped into the dark of the cistern. She heard it strike water, then nothing. She sat on the sill with her heels against the stone and thought about going down after it, about the cold and the rope her uncle would scold her for taking. Instead she took the tin lantern from her coat, the cheap one she had bought for the walk, lit it, and held it out over the drop.
Something silver turned slowly in the black water, a crescent with a lotus of teal glass at its heart. It was not the necklace at all but the moon itself, caught and bobbing, rising towards her light. She laughed out loud, and the laugh went round the broken walls and came back to her, and she understood that the castle had been keeping its moon all along, waiting for someone to ask for it back.
