Antlers, crescent moon and arrow on upper arm
Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A black linework tattoo shows a pair of antlers above a stylised symmetrical centrepiece with feather-like shapes, a vertical arrow and a small crescent moon. The lines are uniform and outlined, with little shading, and the design is shown in black ink only. It sits on the outer upper arm, centred in the frame against a blurred floral fabric background.

The rain had got into the canvas by the second week at Tyler's Meadow, so nobody minded when the generator coughed and the lights went out along the midway. My uncle Eamon ran the rifle gallery and the bow stall beside it, and he was already swearing at a cable when I came round the back of the Waltzer with his flask.

The stall was a painted board with a crescent moon chalked above the target rings, a joke he had kept since his father's day. Nobody ever won the star prize. You had to put three arrows through the cutout stag's antlers, which were real deer horn his cousin had sold him cheap, and most people gave up after one. I had been shooting since I was nine, though. The trick was to stop looking at the target and look at the gap between the points.
That night a boy in a borrowed anorak stood at the rope a long time without paying. Then something moved past the edge of the pitch, beyond the generator's glow, and it was a stag, grey and real, standing in the wet stubble where the council had promised to plant trees. Nobody else seemed to see it. It looked at the board, then at me, and I understood it had come for the stall the way the rest of us came for the Ferris wheel.
I took my uncle's bow off its hook and handed the boy the spare. He missed twice. On the third pull the arrow sailed clean between the horns and the board gave a little shudder, as if something had taken hold of the other end. When the lights came back on, the star was gone and the stag was gone, and only the boy was left, grinning at the empty post as if he had won it fair.
