Ornate mandala and blade forearm tattoo
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo covers the forearm with an ornate central panel of mandala-like floral and scroll patterns, with a long curved line sweeping along the arm and ending in a pointed tip. Bold black outlines are combined with stippled dotwork shading inside the panel to build depth and texture. The design is entirely black and grey, shown on a hand wearing rings against a wooden floor.

The curved needle is the last thing left on the tray at ten past three, and you have counted it twice already. Forceps, swabs, a spare scalpel with its blade sheathed. You lay them out the way Sister Mallory taught you on this same ward twenty years ago, in rings around a centre point, because she said a tray set in a circle is easier to read in bad light. Nobody on nights has ever argued with her.

Bed nine's pump starts chiming just after half past. You silence it, check the line, and sit with the old man who keeps asking whether the tide has turned yet at Whitby. You tell him it has, which is probably true somewhere. He describes the brass panel above his mantelpiece, a sun with a ribbon of scrollwork around its rim that his wife polished every Sunday until the edges shone. You listen to every curl of it while the drip counts down.
At four the corridor lights dim to their night setting and the trolleys go quiet. The monitor on bed four draws a clean line across the screen that climbs, bends, and comes to a fine point. You watch it longer than you should, until you understand it is only a patient turning over in his sleep.
By six the blinds are going grey. You gather the tray, count the needle one last time, and find it lying exactly where you left it, sitting in its circle as though it had never been anywhere else.
