Black and grey crescent moon tattoo filled with musical staves and notes, shown on the inner forearm of a person wearing a red top and friendship bracelets.

Crescent moon with music staves on forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A crescent moon outline is filled with several horizontal staves and musical notes, including quavers and a beamed pair. The linework is fine and dark, with soft grey shading that gives the staves some depth. The tattoo sits centrally on the forearm against plain skin, with a red garment and woven bracelets visible at the edges of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The piano in the back room of the Lantern Club had one sticking key, middle C, and Marisol said it was the only honest note in the building. Every Thursday after the last set I sat on the stool and wrote out whatever the moon had dropped on the roof that week, staff lines ruled in pencil on the backs of gig flyers. The crescent sat over the bins that night, thin as a fingernail, and I hummed it down the stairs while the shutter rattled behind me.

The notes did not want to be sensible. A quaver kept sliding off its stave into the margin, and a pair of beamed eighths kept wanting to be a question. I tried to fix them with a ruler and a rubber, and the paper went soft and grey where I'd pressed too hard. Marisol said the trick was to let the lines sag where the light got in, like a tide-line on wet sand, and then the whole thing would hold its shape without pretending.

In March the landlord sold the upright for scrap, and the key went with it. I still write on Thursdays, on whatever is nearest. Last week it was the inside of a cereal box, and the moon came out of it looking exactly as it always did, with a little music wedged in the hollow where the light is meant to go, waiting for somebody to play it.
