Stylised cat with swirling tail on a lower leg
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A single black outline of a seated cat with pointed ears and a long tail that curls into spirals at the base. The linework is smooth, even and of uniform weight, with no shading or fill. The photo is taken at an angle in warm indoor light, with a wooden floor and a fur-trimmed item visible in the background.

Dust hung in the heat behind the trailer, and for a moment neither of us moved.

Nobody in Tarrant Flats would claim it. Old Pearl at the roadhouse said it had been there since her husband was alive, which made it a very old cat for a desert, or a very patient one. I started leaving a tin of sardines on the verge each dawn on the run north, and each dawn the tin was empty and the cat was waiting with its tail curled into those tight spirals at the base. I told myself that was the reason I kept stopping.
Then the council crew came out with the grader, and the marker was gone, and the old bitumen had been ripped up and carted off. The new road lay black and soft under the sun. I found the cat in the middle of it, sitting where the line used to be, paws tucked under, as if it had chosen the spot to wait for something that was finally coming along.
I got out and crouched beside it. When I looked back at the fresh tar, the tail had left a trail of spirals pressed into it, one loop inside another, running all the way to the horizon.
