Small sprout tattoo on the inner wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small sprout with a short stem and a single leaf curling to the right is inked on the inner forearm, just above the wrist. The lines are thin and even, with solid black fill on the leaf. The ink is the only colour in the image, set against plain pale skin and a plain cream wall.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The ovens are already ticking when you reach the back step, and the flour sacks have sweated overnight, so the whole room smells of wet grain and cold brick. Ruth has left a note on the proving rack in her wobbly capitals: DON'T TOUCH THE RYE. You touch the rye anyway, because it is your rye now, and because the sack by the bin has split along one seam and something green is pushing through the paper.

It is a single shoot, no longer than your thumbnail, bent over at the tip as if it has already caught sight of the window. Nobody planted it. The sack came off the lorry from the mill in Hexham three weeks ago, and nobody has let a seed near the dough since. You crouch on the tiles with the torch in your teeth and watch the stem stand a little straighter, the leaf unfurling to the right, toward the grey square of glass where the dark is starting to thin.

You should bin it. Ruth would bin it, with a sniff. Instead you pinch the sack shut, pull the stool over, and sit with your knees against the oven door while the first van rattles into the yard. By the time the shutters go up, the light has found the shoot and turned the leaf the colour of crust you have not yet baked.
