Crescent moons and triangles line design
Fine line · Colour · Flash
A drawn tattoo design in thin blue ink on a pale paper background. It shows two overlapping crescent moons at the centre, with small triangles and circles at each end of a long diagonal line and scattered dots around them. The linework is precise and uses single thin strokes, with some dashed circles and hatched marks on the triangles.

The ewe has been straining since the church clock struck eleven, and your father is asleep in the armchair with his boots on. You pull your wellies over two pairs of socks and take the torch from its nail. Outside the frost has turned the yard to tin. The moon is two days off the new, a paring of light low over the top field, and the hawthorn along the boundary throws a single dark line across the grass, straight as the rule your grandfather used to lay across his drawings.

In the lean-to the straw smells sour and sweet. The ewe lies on her side with her head stretched back, and you kneel in the wet bedding and do what he taught you: one hand flat, patience first, pulling only when the next push comes. The lamb arrives all at once, a slick grey bundle that does not move. You clear its nose with a wisp of straw and rub hard along its ribs until it coughs, then shakes its head like a man waking from a bad dream.
Your grandfather used to find north from the gatepost by lining two stars up along the wire, and he said the scatter of sky was there to keep a farmer honest. You go back to the gate because the lamb is up on its legs now and the ewe is nosing it clean. Above the barn the stars are spilled wide and small, and you find the thin crescent of moon hanging over the hawthorn line, sharp and exact, the way he would have wanted it drawn.
